Formed in the Fall of 2001, DARKSTAR is an all original alternative-rock band hailing from Ottawa, ON. The term 'original' rings utterly true for this band - the combination of each members disparate musical styles and backgrounds, creates a sound that is emotionally charged, sonically resonant and decidely unique.
A prominent band in the Ottawa independent music scene, DARKSTAR have spent the last 2 years playing all across the city at venues such as Barrymore's, Zaphod's and Cafe Dekcuf. Most recently the band has released their first pro-quality studio recording, entitled the DarkStar EP.
Musically, DARKSTAR is all over the map, with elements of rock, alternative, funk, soul, trip hop, folky-acoustic, and even punk all finding a place within their music. |

JULIA STARK's first foray into the world of music was playing violin at age 5. She eventually quit that, realizing that her true calling was in singing. Performing in various high school talent shows in Ottawa, she quickly learned to play the guitar as well. Her main influences are Tori Amos, Jeff Buckley, No Doubt, & Garbage. As a writer, Julia's early songs were acoustic-based, but teaming up with Dave to write songs, & being in a rock 'n roll band has allowed her to experiment vocally & lyrically in ways she never thought possible. |
| Guitarist/Songwriter DAVE GRYS is from Richmond Hill, ON. Largely a self-taught guitarist, he has played guitar and written songs for around 10 years. In terms of musical influences, Dave cites Suede, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Verve and Depeche Mode as the main bands he draws inspiration from - although the list actually goes

ANDREW KAMEL is DarkStar's other native of Ottawa. He started playing drums at the age of 15, as well as taking up other various instruments (piano, guitar, etc). Kamel, as he is generally
known to most, first started playing in a band with Dave when the 2 met at university. His musical influences
include Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam and Our Lady Peace. He likes pie. |
| MARC FARIA, DarkStar's bassist, is originally from Cambridge, ON (although he's quite comfortable calling Ottawa home). He has played bass for 3 years - jamming with various people before joining DarkStar, and completing the lineup. His musical influences are Our Lady Peace, Incubus, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Led Zeppelin. |
